Piracy
Imagine you have been working on a one-of-a-kind project and it has taken you months, maybe years. Finally it is done and you share it with the world. Suddenly, there are copies everywhere that people are making and giving away. Copies of the original that you worked so hard on. I know I would be upset. What would you say if I told you that this happens every day and you are a part of it?
Piracy works a lot like my scenario above. It is taking someone's work, making copies, and handing them out to your friends and family. This happens millions of times a year. Music and movies are the most easily pirated forms of media. We have a song or CD that we love, we tell our friends "Hey, you have to hear this", hand them a disc, and we have stolen from the artist. Yes, stolen. Did you ever think of piracy that way? Musicians work for months, if not years, on their songs. It is their livelihood. When we make copies and give them to others, the artist is cheated out of the money he would have made if our friend had bought the song/CD.
Sadly, most people don't even think about it. It's not really a big deal. But it is a huge deal, especially for Christians. We are commanded not to steal. Please respect the hard work of the men and women who make your favorite music and never give away copies of their music. Free music is a different story, because the artist is offering it to anyone and everyone free of charge. But, you have to be careful to get your music from legal sources. I have a few links for you here. Thank you for reading and I hope you spread the word among your friends and family.
