When The Game Stands Tall

You probably heard about "When The Game Stands Tall" if you have any connection to Christian media. It came out last summer, but I just got to watch it.

It was very good.

One of the things I liked the most was how the coach emphasized the team, commitment, and dependability more than football. He was training his players to be good men. Football was just a game. "The Streak" didn't mean anything to him, if it came at the cost of the team. There is a quote in the movie by the coach that says something like, "This program is not about football, it's about making sure that when you take your places in the world, or in this community, you are dependable."

Teamwork leads to wins. When the guys are focused on how great they are as individuals; when they are at odds with each other, they lose. When they lean on each other, depend on each other, and open up to their teammates, they win. The team is the most important part of the program. Not the wins or the records -  each other.

I think every team should watch this movie. Baseball, soccer, basketball, hockey, etc. If you play a team sport, watch it. Watch the coach and how proud he is of his players when they put the team first and how disappointed he is when they put themselves first and are fighting with each other. This movie is powerful and has lessons every sports player should hear and learn because Coach Ladouceur has it right - those types of lessons will help you become the kind of person who is dependable and trustworthy.
